New Moon Magic

The Seed, the Shadow, and the Whisper in the Dark

“Out of darkness, beginnings take root. The void is not empty — it’s fertile.”

The Tone of the New Moon

The New Moon is one of my favorite phases to work with. What a lot of witches feel toward the Full Moon, I tend to feel toward the Dark and New Moons. When we shift out of the Dark Moon and step into the New, there’s this subtle but undeniable burst of energy — like slipping on rose-colored glasses and suddenly everything looks promising again.

Some people think the Dark Moon and New Moon are the same. They’re not. They’re close enough that it’s hard to tell the difference if you’re not tuned in, but if you pull down the current and really feel it, you’ll know. The Dark Moon is emptiness, closure, silence. The New Moon is potential, anticipation, that “first breath after a long night” kind of vibe.

The New Moon is the time for beginnings, initiations, first steps. It’s when you plant seeds, literal or figurative. If you want to start a new job, career, love affair, project, or even just a new perspective of yourself, this is when to do it.

And if you want to understand what the New Moon feels like, try this: remember the excitement of unwrapping a birthday gift as a kid. Or the thrill of hearing your child’s first words. Or the pride of being offered a promotion. That bubbling, adventurous, newness is what the New Moon offers. Anchor yourself in that memory, then channel it. The emotions themselves become your magical current.

Love & Relationships

The obvious work here is to attract new love, but the New Moon is also excellent for refreshing existing relationships.

If you’re with someone and things feel frazzled, use this phase to start a new adventure together. Try something different — wear that cologne you know they like, shift your bedroom routine, plan a trip you’ve both been putting off. It doesn’t need to be dramatic; it just needs to be new.

This is also a great time to work on communication. If you and your partner have been circling the same argument, set the intention to see things with fresh eyes. The New Moon is perspective-shifting energy, use it to find new ways of speaking and listening.

You might also consider starting a love altar. Keep it simple:

  • A photo of the two of you together.

  • Rose quartz.

  • Jasmine incense.

  • Trinkets, gifts, or souvenirs that mean something to your bond.

  • A sweetening jar or mojo bag.

Feed it regularly, burn incense on Fridays, refresh the jar often. Love magic doesn’t thrive on neglect.

Wealth & Abundance

The New Moon is hands-down one of the best times for money magic. It’s about beginnings and growth, the perfect tide to call in new streams of income, new opportunities, and new wealth.

If you’re looking for a job, use this phase to start the search. If you’re launching a business, align your first step with this Moon. If you’re trying to shift your relationship with money, Friday under a New Moon is your sweet spot.

Here’s one of my favorite prosperity techniques:

  • Download a check register or finance app.

  • Create a new “account” and name it something like “Prosperity Flow.”

  • Each day, deposit an increasing amount of “universal money.” Day one: $100. Day two: $200. Day three: $300.

  • Then spend it — not in real life, but in detail. On paper. On Amazon. In your imagination.

The trick is to feel what it would be like to actually receive those things. If you buy a pool, what comes with it? Do you need a service? Do you buy a BBQ for summer parties? See it, feel it, live it. The more vividly you spend, the more your energy aligns with abundance.

I’ve used this technique with great results. It forces you to fine-tune what you really want and shows the universe you’re ready to receive.

Protection

New Moons are ideal for starting long-term protective charms or wards. Think seedlings, small things planted now that grow into powerful defenses later.

If the New Moon falls on a Saturday, double the power: Saturn + New Moon is a fortress in the making.

Try this: design protective sigils and “plant” them around your home or property. Ground them deep into the earth. Program them to sprout into confusion for anything hostile that tries to get through. It’s like surrounding yourself with a wild, protective hedge, the more someone pushes, the more lost they become.

Healing

This is the phase for healing that requires new growth.

Think: burns, cuts, broken bones, or anything that needs skin, tissue, or strength to regenerate. Use the New Moon to accelerate the body’s natural processes.

One of my favorite practices is working with a dedicated healing stick.

  • Find a stick that calls to you.

  • Carve healing sigils into it.

  • Infuse it with the New Moon’s current every cycle.

  • Use it only for bringing about healing, regeneration, and repair.

Over time, it becomes a powerful ally, a tool charged not just with your intent but with the Moon’s cumulative energy.

Malediction / Baneful Work

Witches often save their baneful work for the Dark Moon. That’s valid, but don’t underestimate the New.

The New Moon is perfect for curses that need to take root and grow over time. Plant the seed in shadow and let it work quietly until it sprouts in your target’s life.

For example: write your target’s name and intent on black paper, bury it with baneful herbs like wormwood or thistle, and leave it underground. Each phase of the Moon will water it with power until the curse blooms in full force.

If you need something to really stick, to sink into the bones of a situation, the New Moon is your accomplice.

Witchlings

The New Moon is a magical time to work with children. It’s fresh-start energy, perfect for setting tone and intention.

If your kids are starting school soon, use this phase to bless their year, for good grades, social ease, and joy in learning. Pair it with the other phases throughout the year to adjust and support as needed.

Or, use the New Moon to push them gently out of their comfort zone. Take them somewhere new, introduce them to an activity they haven’t tried before, or start a family project. Show them that beginnings can be exciting, not scary.

Fun idea: make a New Moon Wish Jar.

  • Have your kids write one wish or intention.

  • Place it in a jar with glitter, stones, or little charms.

  • Seal it until the Full Moon, then revisit to see how things shifted.

This teaches them that even in darkness, there’s potential waiting to bloom.

Working: The New Moon Gem Elixir

This is one of my favorite ways to embody New Moon energy, a Gem Elixir crafted to boost energy, confidence, and motivation at the start of a new project.

You’ll need:

  • Citrine (for good vibes and abundance)

  • Amethyst (for intuition and protection over new growth)

  • Carnelian (for confidence and energy)

  • A mason jar (or any jar)

  • Distilled water

  • Cheesecloth (to cover the jar)

  • Vodka (80 proof or higher, optional, for preservation)

  • Pen & paper

Steps:

  1. Clear your space. Ground and center.

  2. State your purpose: you are creating a Gem Elixir to fuel energy and confidence for new beginnings.

  3. Pour water into the jar. Focus on the New Moon, your project, your confidence.

  4. Add the stones one by one, tuning into their properties. Thank them as you place them in the water.

  5. Raise your hands to the sky. Pull the New Moon’s current down and into the jar.

  6. Write an affirmation (ex: “I am confident, energized, and ready to begin”) and tape it to or place it under the jar.

  7. Cover with cheesecloth and leave overnight where the New Moon can touch it.

  8. In the morning, strain the water. Mix with equal parts vodka if you want it to last longer (up to four months). Without alcohol, it will keep for about a week in a cool, dark place.

Uses:

  • Drink a shot glass when you need energy. (Obviously not for a morning boost if you added the vodka, maybe a drop if it is heavily diluted)

  • Add a few drops to spell bags or jars.

  • Dab onto chakra points to align with the elixir’s vibration.

The New Moon Breath

If you don’t have time for elaborate workings, here’s a simple but potent practice:

  • Step outside under the dark sky.

  • Breathe in deeply, imagining the void filling your lungs.

  • Exhale while whispering your intention.

Repeat three times. Let your breath be the seed.

The New Moon is not absence. It’s fertility disguised as emptiness. It’s the silence before the song, the soil before the sprout, the womb before the birth.

Ignore it and you waste one of the most potent currents in witchcraft. Work with it, and you plant seeds that swell with the waxing tide, peak at the Full, and release at the Waning.

So whisper into the dark. Plant what you want to grow. Claim your beginning.

Because in the New Moon’s shadow, only the Witch bold enough to dream will decide what blooms.
